“We want the same.”

Asked what the community most needed, parents and teachers in Kasarani gave one answer: the education resources that wealthy children get. Wezesha — “to empower” in Swahili — is that answer, built.

The story

Wezesha began with a structured question put to the community, and the community’s answer became its blueprint. Not a school: an education center. Students stay in their local government schools, and Wezesha wraps around them — a safe place to study, teachers who fill curriculum gaps, meals for children who need them, and the structure of a family for those growing up without one.

The center was operational within weeks of that first conversation. Today it is a registered Kenyan community organization, its programs carried by a Kenyan team.

Four pillars, one word: together

Learning Together — scholarships, tutoring, and mentorship from primary school through university.

Caring Together — mental health as foundation, not afterthought: clinical psychologists on staff and free mental-health care for every child in the program; every Wezesha student participates in some form of therapy. Nothing else like it exists in the community.

Growing Together — employability: clubs, camps, training, and leadership formation.

Thriving Together — support that reaches whole families, teen mothers, and the most vulnerable.

Results

116students on scholarship today
700+indirect beneficiaries
74employability graduates
13partner schools

And the result that matters most, from the 2024–25 academic year: in every grade Wezesha serves, the top student at the local primary and secondary schools is a Wezesha student — in some grades, the top two or three. These are among the most disadvantaged children in the community, outperforming schools of thousands.
